The White Shark Trust Field Research Assistantship is proud to introduce you to our assistants:
Michael UNWIN from Watford (United Kingdom), Jessica da Silva from Toronto (Canada), Andrew BLAKE from Newport (Wales, UK) and Maryalice WALKER from Portland (USA).
On Wednesday the 16th of April 2003, we welcomed Sophie, Jean and Elizabeth Macchi, three childhood friends of Michael's on board Lamnidae. The wind unfortunately picked up during the day, and the afternoon turned out to be quite rough. Nevertheless, we observed three sharks within a couple of hours...
On Thursday the 17th of April 2003, we observed seven different white sharks around Dyer Island. One of those rare days, especially during this upcoming winter season, with no wind and absolutely flat water... Great day!

We also observed on Bryde's Whale... these whale can be observed on occasions throughout the year to the contrary of Southern Right Whales who can only be seen from June through December...

In the meanwhile, the joint WCS / MCM team working in Struisbaai, near the Southernmost point of Africa, tagged the only two sharks they observed on the 16th, and today, they only observed one shark...

On Friday the 18th of April 2003, Ramon Bonfil, Stephen Swanson and Mike Meyer came back to Gansbaai to try to deploy the remaining two satellite PAT tags and a few ultrasonic transmitters. Unfortunately, the sharks proved to be difficult to get in Struisbaai.

Maryalice and Andrew went out on Stan, Shark Diving Unlimited's boat...

The team on board Lamnidae observed 13 different white sharks today, and we deployed the two remaining satellite tags within a few hours. This tagging expedition has been an incredible success so far... now we just have to wait a few months to see if the tags have worked (and discover where our sharks have gone to)...
What would these last few exciting days be without a party? This very successful expedition needed to be properly celebrated! We were all invited at Stephan's, and we spent a fantastic evening dancing and, well, celebrating! Great evening and a lot of fun!
Below are some more pictures taken by Jessica during the past two weeks...
