The White Shark Trust Field Research Assistantship is proud to introduce you to our assistants:

Darren John HUNNIFORD (Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Wales) and James KIRBY (London, England).

Well... after three days of bad weather and heavy seas, we went to sea again after Christmas on Saturday the 27th of December...

It seems like we got a belated Christmas present from the Sharks... A wonderful day with 13 different Great White Sharks!!! Very unusual during the summer season... But we certainly were excited and very happy!

And the Sharks took their time... they did not just come for short visits by Lamnidae, our research boat, they actually stayed for a long time... we had up to three Sharks around the boat at times (see the pictures in which you can see two Sharks for example)... It was a long day, but we certainly wanted to make the most of this fantastic day at sea with the Sharks!
One of the Sharks (above, below and left) was not interested in the bait... She just loved the engines, swimming directly towards the engine, sometimes sticking her head out of the water at the back of the boat to check us out, and then mouthing the engines... Fortunately for her, our engine socks protect her from harming herself... She probably was not so lucky somewhere else looking at her scars... we nicknamed her "Scarface"...
The Sharks were so good during the day, that Darren and James were invited by the Shark Diving Unlimited to join them for a cage dive... Not only did we have great Sharks today, the underwater visibility was great - The best diving conditions in probably two months... And James and Darren both got to enter the underwater world (in a cage) of the Great White Sharks for a little while...
And Scarface again... she broke one of our engine covers, so I had to push her away... What an incredible friend she was for the whole day! And she came with a friend of her own too... but that friend of hers was a bit crazy, speeding up towards the bait. Anyway, it was a great day (I repeat myself, but it has been a while since we had a day like today)!
We then took an early evening drive along the shoreline back to the little harbour of Kleinbaai... We wanted to check out the shallow waters behind the breakers to look for (more) White Sharks... we weren't as lucky as a few weeks before, but we spotted some Dolphins chasing small fish in the shallows... What a day!
