The White Shark Trust Field Research Assistantship is proud to introduce you to our assistants:

Alex BROWN (Burnham, England), Trey SNOW (Wilmington, North Carolina, USA), Nicolas PADE (Nivaa, Denmark) and John NICHOLS (La Jolla, California, USA).

Monday the 4th of October, we were invited to board Shark Diving Unlimited's boat Barracuda. Since they only had a few guests, this was a good opportunity for our assistants to dive in the Shark cage... We observed six different White Sharks, and Alex, Nick, John and Trey all went into the cage... They were lucky as two large Sharks cruised past the cage...
We then visited Dyer Island Channel to look at the permanent Cape Fur Seal colony on Geyser Rock opposite Dyer Island... Shame about the drizzle, bad visibility and overcast day, but at least the sea conditions were very nice... In the afternoon, we all went to Frank se Gat to celebrate a good day with the Sharks and a great moment in the cage.
Tuesday the 5th of October 2004... Rainy, cold and overcast day at sea... and probably one of the worst Shark days in many months. We observed four different Sharks. No interest whatsoever in our bait, the Sharks were just cruising swiftly past the boat remaining deep. Strange... very strange! Let's hope for better days with the Sharks and weather soon...
The weather turned worse on Wednesday the 6th of October... Rain... and more rain... A huge storm is looming south of Africa, and the next few days will be wet and windy. We are stuck on dry land! On Wednesday evening, Tracey cooked a delicious seafood Paela, and we kept warm by the fire...
The following week, Lamnidae did not go out to sea... Three bad weather days... Michael was in Cape Town for a workshop about a book on Sharks of Southern Africa on Thursday and Friday. On Friday the 8th of October, our assistants were invited by Shark Diving Unlimited to go to sea and cage dive...
During the night of Saturday to Sunday the 9th/10th of October, Michael Scholl woke up with a terrible food poisoning episode that would last for most of the week. Alex, Nick, Trey and John were generously invited on board Barracuda (Shark Diving Unlimited) on the 11th, 12th and 13th of October during Michael's sickness and recovery... Here are some pictures taken by Alex and Trey during the week...
