The White Shark Trust Field Research Assistantship is proud to introduce you to our assistants:

Mario LEBRATO CAMBLOR (Sama Langreo, Asturias, Spain), Alexia CURMI (San Gwann, Malta), Elsbeth Louise McSTAY (Newport-on-Tay, Fife, Scotland) and David Anthony JONES (Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK)

Andy Brandy CASAGRANDE IV is living in Fishoek on the shores of False Bay where he is assisting Alison KOCK (South African Museum / Save Our Seas) with her research project at Seal Island for the next few months.

Timo SECKLER (Ellenberg, Germany) has been our assistant from the 15th of July to the 15th of August, and will continue his assistantship with the White Shark Trust from September through January 2006. Timo left for Mossel Bay on the 15th of July to assist Ryan JOHNSON with his active telemetry tracking of White Sharks in the bay.

On Tuesday the 23rd of August, we launched Lamnidae on a dubious weather day, with ever changing conditions, but altogether a rather nice day at sea... We welcomed Chris Florescu on board Lamnidae, the first time in nearly two and a half years. Anti-seasickness tablets and everybody was in shape for once...
This definitely has been the worst winter in seven years with stormy weather and bad sea conditions since mid-April... Unfortunately, this has also been the worst winter for Sharks too... We observed only three Sharks for a few minutes in six hours of chumming... Certainly not amazing... And since we forgot to pack lunch, we talked a lot about food, and other things...
As the sun was slowly setting, a flock of Jackass Penguins were coming back to Dyer Island, and probably encountered a school of small fish on their way. Many gulls found our chum very interesting, and David felt like a target on the back of Lamnidae. We are starting a new photo ID project with gulls from now on... a lot more success than with the Sharks lately! Garanteed!
Wednesday the 24th of August was the best day with Sharks in several weeks... The sea conditions and weather was great at first, and the northwesterly wind only became strong in the afternoon fortunately. We welcomed Lance Koetze, manager of the Carcharias Boutique, on board Lamnidae. Chris Florescu and his mom went cage diving on Barracuda today...
We observed six different White Sharks today... And same as yesterday, one Southern Right Whale surfaced a few meters next to Lamnidae before disappearing... A massive storm with 25-40 ft swell is approaching the Western Cape, and that should be quite a sight... Surfers, get your boards waxed and fill up your jet skis!
