The White Shark Trust Field Research Assistantship is taking a two week break in fieldwork. Michael Scholl and the White Shark Trust will be busy with SABC's Special Assignement TV program on the controversial Gansbaai Salmon Farm, and with a National Geographics production on White Sharks and Shark vs human incidents.

Our new team of field research assistants will join us mid-July, and we will resume our usual fieldwork.

Andy Brandy CASAGRANDE IV is living in Fishoek on the shores of False Bay where he is assisting Alison KOCK (South African Museum / Save Our Seas) with her research project at Seal Island for the next few months. Alison is also taking a break in her fieldwork to attend a conference, and Andy decided to spent two weeks with us in Gansbaai.

Chris MILNES (Grantham, Lincolnshire, England), one of our old assistants from 2003 and 2004, has also come back to visit and is also volunteering for the White Shark Trust as a friend and guest. Chris will be joining the Shark Diving Unlimited team on board Barracuda and continue our photo identification project during this break.

On Tuesday the 5th of July 2005, we started filming the on-location part of the documentary involving Shannon Ainslie and his encounter with one, maybe two, White Sharks...

Nahoon has been rated the second best Surfing Spot in Southern Africa after Jeffrey's Bay, and it presents three surfing areas: Beach for beginners, Corner for advanced and Reef for pros...

We will not reveal too many information on our interesting theories and finding behind the attacks that have occured in the area... just watch the show when it airs on National Geographic channel in October 2005!

The team split in two groups to be more efficient. Myself (MikeS), MikeR and AndyBC4 scopped the different filming locations and found a new hotel closer to Nahoon. The rest of the team were busy with the interviews of Shannon and Brandon Ainslie, and Willie Maritz, who conducted the original investigation...
At lunch, we all met again, and the Ainslie brothers listened to ABC4's 'Great White Shark' song in the parking... and they loved it! It certainly was not the last time, this great song was played this week in East London. AndyBC4 even played live in the Buchaneers's Club one evening! In the afternoon we filmed in the surf...
On Wednesday the 6th of July 2005, we were busy with the investigation filming... We had great fun with Sea Kayaks, broken surf boards, playing on the beach and swimming behind the breakers where most Sharks lurk! Everything was always done very profesionnaly but with a lot of fun and many laughs! Great day!
This is Andrew Carter's surf board after his Shark encounter in 1994 at Nahoon Reef... He survived the incident, but his friend died trying to help Andrew. Very sad story...
In the afternoon, we used a aupport boat to work on the waters behind the surf... While Charles and Sue were going over the script and shot list, we enjoyed a pleasnt ride to the sharky waters where we would continue with our investigation and try to explain what happened that July day in 2000 when Shannon was thrown off his surfboard by a White Shark...
Coming back to shore, many fishermen were just coming in from a fishing competition, and we looked at their catch of the day. In the evening, we discovered an amazing restaurant 'La Petite' in East London... Believe it or not, a Swiss restaurant! But I could not find any of my dearly missed raclette or fondue (it was too hot anyway)...
